The Climate Cent Foundation looks back on a successful first year (70 kb)

Press release of 19.10.2006

The Climate Cent Foundation began its activities a year ago. Within a year, it has developed and launched four investment programmes in Switzerland. Abroad, the Foundation has furthermore purchased Kyoto certificates generated by different projects. Twelve months after its launch, the Climate Cent Foundation has already signed contracts covering an overall volume of emissions reductions of 3.6 million tonnes of CO2. The Foundation Council is thus optimistic that the contractual targets set by the Swiss Confederation will be met.

Climate and CO2

The Climate Cent Foundation acquires CO2 reductions through an innovative auction model (93 kb)

Press release of 29.06.2006

At a press conference held in Berne today, the Climate Cent Foundation presented its second programme for the reduction of CO2 emissions in Switzerland. With the Auction Programme, the Foundation purchases projects aiming at the efficient use of fossil fuels and combustibles, the use of renewable energies as well as the use of waste heat. Over the period 2008 to 2012, CO2 emissions should thus be reduced by at least one million tons in as cost-efficient a manner as possible. The auction model is an innovative approach, used for the first time to reduce CO2 emissions in Switzerland, which ensures maximum utility is extracted from the invested funds.

Press release of 31.05.2006

At a launch event held in Zurich's Technopark, the Climate Cent Foundation today presented its Buildings Programme to over 200 interested participants. Until 2009, the programme will make available 182 million Swiss Francs for the energy-saving renovation of oil and gas heated residential and commercial buildings. In order to qualify for funding, projects must entail the complete renovation of at least two of the three elements "roof/attic slab", "windows" or "walls" and trigger investments of more than 40'000 Swiss Francs.

Press release of 03.02.2006

In accordance with its contractual obligations, the Climate Cent Foundation has submitted its business plan to the Swiss Confederation at the end of January 2006. The Foundation will achieve its CO2 reduction target over the period 2008-2012 with a double strategy. Over two-thirds of the Foundation's resources of CHF 740 million will be invested in Switzerland. More concretely, CHF 180 million will be allocated to an investment programme targeted at the energy-saving refurbishment of buildings and CHF 190 million to three rounds of tenders for projects in the fields of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. Abroad, CHF 200 million will be assigned to the purchase of Kyoto certificates stemming from high-quality projects.

European Commission proposes ambitious biomass and biofuels action plan and calls on Member States to do more for green electricity

Today the Commission adopted a detailed action plan designed to increase the use of energy from forestry, agriculture and waste materials. Andris Piebalgs, Commissioner for Energy, said, "This plan will reduce Europe's dependence on imported energy, cut greenhouse gas emissions, protect jobs in rural areas and extend the EU's technological leadership in these sectors. The Plan outlines measures in three sectors : heating, electricity and transport. The measures in favour of transport biofuels, in particular, are a practical response to the problem of high oil prices." In parallel, the Commission adopted a report on the different support schemes of electricity from renewable energy sources which concludes that governments need to step up efforts to cooperate among themselves and optimise their support schemes as well as to remove administrative and grid barriers for green electricity.
