Past projects

The founders of the company ENERS Energy Concept have collaborated from 1998 to 2004 within the Laboratory of Energy Systems (LASEN) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL) and have carried out together a number of studies in the field of energy substitution and management, more particularly on the topic of bioenergy and the life cycle assessment (LCA) of energy agents. ENERS has kept an intimate relationship with the LASEN, thereby maintaining a priviledged contact with the academic research environment.

Project:

ASIATIC, European Union (5th Framework Programme), INCO-DEV

Period:

2002-2004

Client:

European Union, FP5

Description:

Agriculture and small to medium Scale Industries in peri-urban Areas through ethanol production for Transport In China (ASIATIC project). Realised in collaboration with the Institut National de Recherche Agronomique (INRA, France). Contribution to the techno-economic description and the environmental evaluation of bioethanol production pathways.

According to an analysis of the existing and future demand in gasoline in China’s transportation sector, and the necessary request in oxygenated additives (MTBE, ethanol) in order to replace lead as octane booster, this proposal aims to give answers to the following question : How to produce and use bioethanol, in a sustainable way with a mutual benefit between rural and urban people? This analysis is based upon two case studies in Liaoning and Guangxy Provinces. This sustainability will be studied in terms of economy (micro and macro), environmental impacts, and social impacts (competition between food, feed and fuel, land use, job creation in rural areas...). Finally, the proposed scenarios will be discussed with a group of regional stakeholders in order to test their acceptability, to implement them in the two provinces and to envisage their feasibility in other Asian areas.

Project:

Potential of biomass energy use in Switzerland

Period:

2004-2005

Client:

Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE)

Download:

Final report (3'367 kb) | Annex (1'144 kb) | Alcohol fuels report (734 kb)

Description:

Study realised and written by INFRAS, in collaboration with the LASEN. Preparation of the bioethanol report and contribution to the Fischer-Tropsch report.

This study aimed at determining the economic potential of biomass energy use in Switzerland. The work consisted first in completing and updating the studies realised until then, and secondly in analysing and evaluating the complete chain of biomass energy, from harvest of biomass resources to the supply of various forms of energy (heat, electricity and transportation fuels). The use of biomass for energy purposes is compared to that of conventional (non renewable) energy agents for specific technological applications. The focus in this study was put on the new technologies for the production of transportation biofuels (bioethanol and Fischer-Tropsch diesel from lignocellulosic feedstocks), and on the use of GIS (Geographic Information Systems) to represent the complete chains based on case studies.

Project:

Energy from cheese whey : Comparison of biogaz and bioethanol

Period:

2004

Client:

Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE), with Alcosuisse

Download:

Final report (2'576 kb)

Description:

Study realised and written by EREP, in collaboration with the LASEN. Realisation of the life cycle assessment of biogaz and bioethanol production from cheese whey.

This study aimed at comparing the production of biogaz and bioethanol from cheese whey, from both economic and environmental points of view. Biogaz is compared to natural gaz and fuel oil for heat production, while bioethanol (used in the form of E5 in a standard gasoline engine) is compared to gasoline for use as a transportation fuel. Only two types of environmental impacts were considered in this study : the consumption of primary non renewable energy and global warming. According to the results of the study, the two streams seem to be complementary.
